“20 years of routine has saturated me” – Gerard Pique rules out returning to Barcelona in coaching role
Gerard Pique is undoubtedly a Barcelona icon and has played a major role in their success since 2008 when he returned from Manchester United. In recent days he spoke about several aspects relating to him and the club.
Speaking to Corriere dello Sport (via Sport), Pique reflected on his time as a player under Pep Guardiola between 2008 and 2012.
“We had incredible talents, but the most special was the combination with Pep. We arrived together, me as a player and him as a coach. There was Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Busquets, all made in La Masia. We always knew each other and everything was natural. Tactically and strategically, he is a genius, he knows how to read games, he gives you the necessary tools to attack and defend. And in delivering the motivational message that he is unreachable, he kept our concentration high for years.”
Pique retired in 2022 and now acts as CEO of Kings League. He talked about the possibility of returning to football itself, but if he did it wouldn't be an everyday activity.
“Later on I might return to football and do something else. I'm not interested in being a coach, twenty years of routine has saturated me. I had to change. Many years between Manchester United and Barcelona, playing every three days, make you satiated. I have great memories, I was lucky and won a lot and I fulfilled my dream as a child: playing at Camp Nou.”
