An extensive world cup will contain 48 teams – 16 more than in Qatar 2022 – and will take place for the first time in three host countries.
England, under the new boss Thomas Tuchel, has their qualifying schedule after the draw was made in December 2024, but the road to 2026 has already started on other continents.

When is the World Cup 2026?
The FIFA Heren World Cup 2026 takes place from 11 June to 19 July 2026.
It will be the 23rd edition of the tournament.

The 2026 tournament takes place in 16 cities in three North American countries: the United States, Canada and Mexico.
It is the first time that a World Cup is organized by three countries.
The last time North America organized the tournament was in 1994, when Brazil triumphed after beating Italy on penalties.

What is the size for the World Cup in 2026?
A bumper line -up from Nations means that there will be 104 games for football fans on performance on – 40 more than in Qatar.
As a result, the knockout phase will start with a round of 32.
The previous size of 32 teams in eight groups has been replaced by one with 12 groups of four.
The top two teams in each group, plus the eight best third placed teams, continue to the Tour of 32.
How does World Cup work eligible?
Nations from UEFA, Conmebol – the South American part – Concacaf (North, Central and Caribbean), AFC (Asian football confederation), OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) and CAF (Confederation of African Football) will all organize their own qualifying campaigns.
Finalistic slots are divided as follows: AFC (8), CAF (9), Concacaf (6), Conmebol (6), OFC (1), UEFA (16).
Qualification from Oceania ends in March 2025, while Conmebol – with Brazil and holders Argentina – will end in September 2025. The Cafe and Concacaf finalists will be confirmed in November 2025, with the European qualifications of UEFA in March 2026.
Two last slots are filled by an inter-confederation play-off.
A tournament with six teams will take place in March 2026: one team per confederation apart from UEFA – Plus an extra team from the Confederation of the Gastlanden.

The full list of group games with group games and kick -off times is only available after the draw for the last tournament, of which FIFA is expected to take place at the end of 2025.
But FIFA has already announced important dates and confirmed that the opening match will be held in Mexico City, with the final in the New York New Jersey Stadium – the home of the New York Giants and New York Jets.
