Neville suggests that Rashford saga could be difficult behind the scenes

Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has suggested things could get tough behind the scenes after Ruben Amorim left Marcus Rashford out of the squad for the second time in a row on Thursday.

United were knocked out of the EFL Cup at the quarter-final stage after a 4-3 defeat away to Tottenham and for the second game in a row, Rashford was nowhere to be seen on the pitch or on the bench.

Amorim had initially excluded both Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from the squad to face Manchester City on Sunday – a match in which United came from behind to win 2-1 – citing the need to maintain high standards within the club.

While there was a recall for Garnacho on Thursday, there was no such olive branch for Rashford.

“Maybe it's the emotion of the last few months that has made me think this could all sort itself out because I don't think academy players with a great talent like Marcus Rashford should ever leave the club,” Neville said.

“It's one of those things where you want players who have been there since they were eight to stay there forever. But in the last few days it's gotten to a point where it might be best for both parties to end it.” to make.” , and might end quite quickly if it goes this route.

“Who knows? It could resolve itself. Ruben Amorim is saying the right things, but I suspect things are getting quite difficult behind the scenes now.”

Following the decision to drop him, Rashford subsequently acknowledged he was 'ready for a new challenge' during an interview with football writer Henry Winter, having spent his entire professional career at the club.

The 27-year-old has scored seven goals in 24 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United this season, including the first league goal of Amorim's spell in charge against Ipswich last month.

“That's the two times he hasn't been in the squad now. He's one of Manchester United's star players and has been for a number of years,” Neville added.

“Actions speak louder than words. Although Amorim says there is a future, he does not have him in the selection, so things are not going well at all.”

“It's sad because United had an incredible win on Sunday and still took the defeat of the win, because the conversation a few days later is all about this and not about the fact that Ruben Amorim has a sensational win to his name.”
