Emiliano Martinez claims he will retire from international football after the 2026 World Cup should Argentina achieve multiple victories.
Lionel Scaloni's side are the reigning world champions after their dramatic victory over France on penalties in Qatar two years ago.
Martinez played a key role as La Albiceleste lifted the trophy for the third time (and first since 1986). His performances between the sticks earned him the Golden Glove award.
The Aston Villa stopper, who was also named Best FIFA Goalkeeper that year, lifted the latest accolade for a second time this week after successfully helping Argentina defend the Copa America title earlier this year crown.
They will look to follow suit in 18 months' time at the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States, becoming only the third country to win consecutive titles, after Italy and Brazil.
If Argentina did so, Martinez promised he would then abdicate his international duty.
“Is there a national team that has won two World Cups in a row?” he told AFA Estudio.
“If I become a two-time world champion with the Argentina national team, I will retire. I promise you that. I will tell you today. I will retire after that World Cup.”
