‘Pogba has always been a champion’ – De Zerbi addresses Marseille link with France midfielder

Roberto De Zerbi suggested Marseille could be interested in signing Paul Pogba, while the Olympians boss said he wants “only champions in my team”.

Pogba is a free agent after his contract with Juventus was terminated by mutual consent last month.

The 2018 World Cup winner is currently serving an 18-month doping ban, which was reduced from four years, but can return to training in January and return to competition two months later.

Marseille are among the clubs involved in securing his services, with president Pablo Longoria saying they will not close the door on a move for the 31-year-old.

Although De Zerbi claimed he had not discussed a possible transfer, he appeared open to attempts to “find space” for Pogba.

“I would like to have only champions in my team,” he told reporters. “Pogba has always been a champion, but to be honest we never talked about it during my conversations with the staff.

“In January we mainly have to find players for the needs we have. When champions arrive, we will of course try to find space and ensure that they can live together.

“That would be absolutely no problem for me. If you have top players, that is not my problem, but that of the opponents.”

Marseille are currently second in Ligue 1 with 30 points, ten behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain, on whom they have a game in hand.

De Zerbi's side will play Saint-Etienne in the Coupe de France round of 64 on Sunday, which will be their last match of 2024.
