Carragher and Redknapp clash over TAA whose contract continues to run down

Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp have disagreed over Trent Alexander-Arnold's contract situation at Liverpool.

The right-back, who joined the Reds' youth academy at the age of six, will end his current contract at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old is set for a blockbuster move to Real Madrid, with contract negotiations at Liverpool stalling in recent weeks.

Indeed, Alexander-Arnold has remained somewhat coy about his future at Anfield, only stating that details of his contract situation will not be revealed publicly.

Carragher argued that the England star has the chance to stay on Merseyside and become an all-time great for Liverpool.

'If he stays at the club. He will be remembered as one of the greatest players to ever play for the football club, not far behind Steven Gerrard,” said the Liverpool legend.

“If he doesn't, he won't be remembered that way. If he doesn't care that's fine, but I'm just telling you what Liverpool supporters are [think].

He further noted that if Alexander-Arnold were to leave, Liverpool fans would be more understanding if he signed a contract with the club so that they would receive some financial benefit from his departure, which would not be the case if he left on a free transfer.

“If I were to advise Trent, I would say it's not just about leaving. I think people understand at Real Madrid,” Carragher added.

'A big part of that is the free transfer. That's a lot of anything. It's the fear that you won't leave us, [but] “Where's our money to replace you?”

'You may not agree with that, but it's just a fact. I would say: “Sign a contract. Make sure it has a decent buyout clause, that's not ridiculous. And if Real Madrid want to buy you in twelve months…”

Redknapp pushed back against Carragher's views, arguing that Alexander-Arnold has earned the chance to explore his options away from Anfield given all he has achieved at the club.

“I think you're being very dishonest… I'm speaking purely as a footballer,” Redknapp argued.

'Liverpool should have completed the contract. What you can't say is, “Oh, sign a contract.”

“So, if he signs a one-year deal and he gets injured, what happens? He has the chance to get a five-year contract or whatever with Real Madrid and try something different in his life.

'I have total respect for whatever he wants to do because he has given everything to Liverpool. He saved them fortunes by not having to buy straightbacks of his quality.”
