‘Too much quality’ in Man City’s squad for dismal run to continue, says Ortega

Stefan Ortega believes there is “too much quality” in Manchester City's squad to continue their poor run for much longer.

The reigning Premier League champions are in the midst of a miserable run, with last weekend's 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa giving them just one win from their last 12 games in all competitions after losing nine.

The streak has seen City drop to seventh in the Premier League, while the country sits 22nd in the Champions League and is in serious danger of missing the last-16 play-offs with just two matchdays remaining.

Goalkeeper Ortega blamed City's problems on a series of injuries to key players, which in turn have resulted in a lack of fluidity in their matches as manager Pep Guardiola has been forced to change sides frequently.

He told the club's official website: “We're all human. I think it's normal that there is a point where you struggle a little bit, with all the injured players we have.

“You don't understand the good rhythm of all the players playing together.”

Ortega is confident the team will quickly return to form thanks to the sheer amount of quality in the squad, which has helped shape one of English football's greatest dynasties since Guardiola won his first Premier League title in 2018 .

“When you come here you see all the quality on the pitch, the manager we have, the staff, you know there will be a turnaround soon,” Ortega said.

“We have created a legacy here and we now have the opportunity to convert it again and show that we are able to go through a bad phase and get back up again.

“There is too much quality here and I think we will soon start winning games again. We have shown that we can also win a few games in a row.”

City have already lost nine games in all competitions this season, and only in 2019/20 (12) and 2016/17 (10) have City lost more games in a season under Guardiola.

In fact, these campaigns are the only seasons that Guardiola has lost more games as manager than he has already in 2024/25.

City will hope to get back on track when they host Everton on Boxing Day.
