Arsenal transfer news: Gunners ‘scout new striker’ as January bid considered

Arsenal will sit third in the Premier League on Christmas Day, with Mikel Arteta's side six points behind leaders Liverpool.

The Reds also have a game in hand on their rivals after the Merseyside Derby was postponed earlier this month due to Storm Darragh. As a result, Arsenal could look to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window and their hand could be forced after it emerged that star man Bukayo Saka will be out of action for several months due to a hamstring injury.

There could also be some spending as Arsenal look for fringe players like Kieran Tierney, who has played just one game so far this season. Here are the latest rules from Mirror Football from the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal 'scout Retegui'

According to CalcioMercato, Arsenal are considering a move to Atalanta and Italian striker Mateo Retegui.

Arsenal are looking for a new goalscorer and have been heavily linked with players such as Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres in recent months. However, Retegui has now emerged as a possible alternative, with Arsenal claiming to have sent scouts to watch him in action last month.

Retegui has scored 14 goals for Atalanta in 25 appearances in all competitions so far this season, having only joined the club from Genoa this summer in a contract worth a reported €28 million.

Shooters 'see Mitchell'

Arsenal are among several clubs interested in signing Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell, according to Spanish outlet Sport.

The report states that Arsenal, Tottenham and Barcelona are all targeting the left-back, who has made almost 150 Premier League appearances for Palace since making his first-team debut in 2020.

Mitchell's contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he could be available at a lower price if Palace want to avoid losing him for free this summer. It was reported in September that Palace would enter negotiations with Mitchell over a new deal, but those talks appear to have stalled.

Goalkeeper aiming

Boca Juniors goalkeeper Leandro Brey has emerged as a target for Arsenal with the Gunners considering a January move for the 22-year-old.

Brey has made 22 senior appearances for Boca and was part of the Argentina squad that reached the quarter-finals at the Paris Olympics, where they were defeated by eventual runners-up France.

Arsenal are said to have sent scouts to watch him in action on several occasions and Arteta has received positive reports about the goalkeeper. Brey's current contract expires in 2027 and he is said to be interested in a move to the Emirates, which could see him return to Boca on loan.
