One of the most complicated issues Barcelona are currently dealing with is Frenkie de Jong's contract situation. The Dutch midfielder has previously turned down the chance to renew and with his current contract set to expire at the end of next season, preparations are being made to put him on the market.
De Jong has lost a lot of fame at Barcelona in recent months. He is no longer a regular starter, and when he has played, his performances have flattered to deceive. As such, club bosses are no longer willing to do whatever it takes to secure his future, MD said.
Barcelona hopes to agree a salary reduction with De Jong as part of the contract negotiations, but the player himself does not want to earn less money. However, the club won't budge on this unless he improves his performance over the remainder of the season, meaning the pressure is on.
If De Jong is on Barcelona's transfer list before next summer, they will have no shortage of interest; a number of Premier League clubs have been linked, as well as Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. At this point it seems more likely that he will leave.
