Maresca admits Fofana could be out for rest of season with a hamstring problem

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has revealed that defender Wesley Fofana could be out for the rest of the season with a hamstring problem.

Fofana has been out of action since coming off against Aston Villa in early December in the latest of a long string of injuries since joining Chelsea from Leicester in 2022.

The French defender missed the entire 2023/24 season due to a torn cruciate ligament and also struggled to stay fit during his debut season at the club.

Maresca said: “He could be out for the season, yes. We don't know exactly, but he could be out for part of the season.

“We have been here together since we started and every time you ask me about Wes, I often say: I am in love with Wes. I am also in love with Wes because he is one of those defenders who gives you the opportunity to put pressure to practice.” and being aggressive one-on-one on the field.

“It is difficult to find such a player. So yes, Wes is a great loss.”

The 24-year-old, who has made just 32 appearances since joining the club, has not yet undergone surgery but Maresca did not rule out the possibility.

The Italian also confirmed that players could be moved during the January window, including Ben Chilwell.

Chilwell has made just one appearance all season, in a Carabao Cup match against Barrow, after being frozen out by the head coach.

“There are players who are probably going to leave [in January]”, said Maresca.

When asked if Chilwell could be one of them, he said: “It could be, yes.”
