Liverpool suffer travel nightmare as flight diverted due to weather conditions

Liverpool endured a travel nightmare as they tried to return to starting line-up after their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday evening.

Arne Slot's side suffered a rare defeat in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final as a controversial goal from Lucas Bergvall secured victory for the home side.

The Reds boss will have plenty to think about after the match and it appears he will have plenty of time to do so after their trip back to Merseyside was disrupted by the weather.

According to The Athletic, the team's flight back from London Stansted was unable to land at John Lennon Airport after the match due to icy fog and had to divert to Birmingham.

From there they took a team bus back to Liverpool but did not arrive until the early hours and training was therefore cancelled.

The Reds will look to bounce back from the defeat when they return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup.

Arne Slot's team has not suffered a defeat since September prior to the loss to Spurs and hopes to be able to win again in the coming matches.

Slot was left fuming as Bergvall escaped a second yellow card to score Tottenham's winner in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Reds boss Slot was furious on the touchline as Bergvall, who was already on the card, brought down Kostas Tsimikas in the build-up to the goal but escaped further punishment.

“I don't think there is any discussion about that,” Slot said. 'I think I saw Ange here on Saturday and Spurs weren't happy with a few decisions.

“One went against them, maybe one for them tonight.

'The decisions have been made, you can't change them. When he didn't give the second yellow card, no one would have thought it would have such a big impact thirty seconds later.

“I'm 99.9 percent sure I wasn't the only one who didn't feel my best when it arrived. [the referee] also far from ideal.'

Before Bergvall's controversial intervention, the two sides had played out a tense encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and it looked like it would end goalless after Dominic Solanke saw a goal disallowed for offside midway through the second half.

Yet Bergvall finished superbly in the 86th minute after good work from the tireless Solanke to score his first goal for Spurs.

Reds captain Virgil van Dijk also expressed his anger at the referees after the match, claiming they needed to do better.

“I think it was quite clear that it was going to be a second yellow card (for Lucas Bergvall),” he added.

“I think it was pretty obvious. It was a coincidence and a minute later he scores the winner.

'It is what it is. In my opinion he (the referee) made a mistake and I told him so. He doesn't think so, but I think it was pretty clear and everyone on the sidelines knew it had to be yellow.

'There's a linesman there, a fourth official, there's VAR, a referee and he doesn't get a second yellow. “I'm not saying that's why we lost tonight, but it was a big moment in the game.”
