Matterface in ‘voice crack of the decade’ awkwardly reacting to Aston Villa goal

SAM MATTERFACE suffered the “vote crunch of the decade” during Friday night's FA Cup match.

The commentator was reporting for ITV on Aston Villa's third round victory over West Ham at Villa Park.

And the way he called Amadou Onana's equalizer sent viewers into hysterics.

Villa midfielder Onana, 23, leveled in controversial scenes.

His original shot went well wide, but the referee strangely thought it needed a deflection and awarded a corner.

From the resulting set-piece, Ezri Konsa and Lucas Paqueta wrestled the ball off before Lukasz Fabianski spilled the ball for Onana to poke home.

Because no VAR intervened in the third round of the FA Cup, the goal was allowed to stand.

And that meant it was time for Matterface's hilarious microphone moment.

He said: “I'm not entirely sure it was a corner, let's see what happens. West Ham won't be happy if anything comes of it.

“In the first post, set up by Mings, Ezri Konsa puts the ball back…

'And it is spilled and smuggled home, Onana is there. It did yield something.

“Amadou Onana's equalizer!

“It's his first GOAL in a while and it's very important for Aston Villa.”

But at the word 'goal', Matterface's voice broke completely, causing a high-pitched squeak.

When ITV posted the clip of the goal on X and the highlights on YouTube, they cut the video before the verbal mishap.

But the unfortunate moment was not missed by fans and it sparked many funny reactions on social media.

Roman Kemp tweeted: “Vote crack of the decade from Sam Matterface.”

Another wrote: “That's a horrible voice crack – happens to the best of us.”

A third added to the Football Cliches pod: “Maybe you should make a full episode about that noise Sam Matterface just made.”

A fourth joked: “It's a first thing in how long?”

A fifth replied: “'It's his first goal' – nice vocal break from Sam Matterface there hahahahaha!”

And one end user joked: “Lee Dixon got so excited by that first Villa goal that it looks like he grabbed Sam Matterface by some part of his anatomy.”

Morgan Rogers completed the turnaround for Villa five minutes later to send the seven-time winners into the fourth round as Graham Potter suffered defeat in his opening game as the new Hammers boss.
