Match report

Federico Chiesa made only his fifth appearance since joining from Juventus and rounded off the scoring on a comfortable afternoon for Arne Slot's much-changed side.

Liverpool broke the deadlock in the sixth minute with a dramatic counter-attack as Darwin Nunez, who had missed two previous chances, finished the ball squarely for Diogo Jota.

After concerns over his defensive displays, Trent Alexander-Arnold showed his class in attack as he crashed an effort off the post to double the hosts' lead on the stroke of half-time.

But shortly after the restart, Accrington twice came close to giving the supporters something to celebrate, with Josh Woods hitting the crossbar and Donald Love heading wide.

However, Liverpool made progress when substitute Jayden Danns kicked the ball home after Chiesa's Billy Crellin save fell kindly his way.

Chiesa had been threatening since he entered the field and scored the goal his performance deserved in the closing stages, firing into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Data debrief: Reds respond in style

Liverpool endured some hesitation to start 2025 with a draw against Manchester United and a defeat against Tottenham in the EFL Cup, but this was a good result for Slot's side.

Despite League Two opposition, the Reds astutely went about their business, recording an expected goals ratio (xG) of 2.93 from their 22 attempts, while also enjoying 78.7% possession.

Alexander-Arnold's goal proved decisive in the match, with the timing of his excellent effort giving Accrington a mountain to climb in the match.

Of the players who have scored a further five goals for Liverpool in all competitions in the Premier League era (since 1992-93), Alexander-Arnold has scored the highest proportion from outside the box (76% – 16 out of 21).
