David Moyes reappointed by Everton as manager 11 years after leaving club to join Manchester United

Everton have confirmed the return of David Moyes as their new manager.

Sean Dyche was sacked on Thursday – just three hours before the Toffees' third round FA Cup win over Peterborough – after winning just one of his last 11 games with Everton, leaving him one point above the Premier League relegation zone .

Moyes returns to management after leaving West Ham at the end of last season, taking charge of Everton for a second time, 11 and a half years after leaving for Manchester United.

Sky Sports News understands that Moyes has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract until 2027.

The 61-year-old said he had “no hesitation” in taking up the job again.

“It's great to be back!” said Moyes. “I have had eleven wonderful and successful years at Everton and did not hesitate when the opportunity was offered to me to rejoin this great club.

“I'm excited to be involved [new owners] The Friedkin Group and I look forward to helping them rebuild the club.

“Now we need Goodison and all Evertonians to do their part to get behind the players in this important season so that as a Premier League team we can move into our fantastic new stadium.”

Everton Executive Chairman Marc Watts added: “We are delighted that David is joining us at this pivotal moment in Everton's history.

With over a decade of experience at the club, he is the right leader to guide us through our final season at Goodison Park and into our new stadium. We look forward to working with David to lay the foundations for a new era for Everton. “

Analysis: Moyes the safest choice for Everton

Sky Sports News' Alan Myers:

“David Moyes is the safest choice. Changing managers in this position comes with a big risk. It is a big plus to have someone who knows the club inside and out and can hit the ground running.”

“Everton needs the club to become safe, I think he can do that. The initial aim is to ensure Everton retains its Premier League status before moving to the new stadium.”

“The landscape has changed since Moyes last played at Everton. He will be working under what can be seen from the outside as ruthless owners. It is not quite the stability he had when Bill Kenwright was chairman.”

'Moye's return cannot be sentimental'

Sky Sports' Ben site:

They say there is no room for sentiment in football.

However, Dyche has been on borrowed time for some time and the club Moyes wants to return to is very different to the one he left in 2013.

It will be seen as an emotional return, but it cannot be a sentimental return. The sight of Seamus Coleman telling Moyes' first-term team-mates Leighton Baines to 'clap' after their names were read out before kick-off against Peterborough hurt the heart.

After a chaotic day it was a moment to enjoy two Everton greats who will become essential sounding boards for Moyes, especially in the first weeks back at Finch Farm.

Moyes will recognize several faces on the training pitch and among the catering staff, but outside the feverish fanbase, little else resembles the fabric he etched 11 years ago, well over a decade ago.

From Angry Birds to Bernard. From a farewell company with eight permanent managers to 777 Partners. From Ronald Koeman's three No. 10s in one summer to Farhad Moshiri's litany of wasted millions, Everton fans have been through the wringer since the man who created the 'People's Club' left as the 'Chosen One' to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

Comparing the Everton team he inherited in March 2002 with the one he will now play for, the 61-year-old is confident he could prove his doubters wrong again. He may not be the perceived 'project manager' immediately seen as a long-term deal, but Moyes is worth a lot more than a six-month romantic rekindle.

“He has gray hair, but we don't care…”

Eight permanent managers have tried to emulate Moyes' achievements at Everton, but have ultimately failed. In a game devoid of sentiment, the man himself deserves the chance to lead them out of trouble.

Keane: Moyes will succeed again at Everton

Sky Sports' Roy Keane has weighed in on Moyes' chances to succeed in his second spell at Everton.

Keane told ITV on Friday: “He is a hugely experienced manager and I am sure he will do a great job.

“He's managed over a thousand games. There's a new stadium coming, so they want to stay in the Premier League. They're more than good enough for that. There's a lot of positive things going back, and I think it's a good thing is.” decent fit.”
