Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has hinted at whether Trent Alexander-Arnold will remain at the club beyond this season.
Alexander-Arnold's future at Liverpool remains shrouded in uncertainty, with the star entering the final six months of his contract amid intense interest from Real Madrid.
The defender was heavily criticized last weekend for his performance during the draw between Liverpool and Manchester United. There were some suggestions that he was distracted by the transfer speculation surrounding him.
However, Alexander-Arnold put in an excellent performance in Liverpool's 4–0 win at home to Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup third round.
Alexander-Arnold found the net with a brilliant attack and gave a very good impression of himself.
Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk will also see their current contracts with Liverpool expire at the end of the season.
Fowler expressed his belief that while Salah and Van Dijk are likely to remain at Liverpool, the same may not be true for Alexander-Arnold, who could be looking for a new challenge at Real Madrid.
Speaking on ITV ahead of the match, Fowler said: 'From the club's point of view, these are the questions people will probably want to ask when we feature the likes of these three players over the last six months.
'What will happen, will happen. My own personal point of view and it is certainly not insider knowledge. I just think two of them will stay, one of them will go and it's up to the people back home to draw their own conclusions about that.”
When pressed further on who he thinks will leave, Fowler stated that Alexander-Arnold could leave.
He said: “I think it's pretty clear, I think Mo will obviously stay and I think Virgil will stay.
'I like Trent as a player, I think he's probably one of the best in the world at what he does and of course I'd like him to stay but we'll see.'
After the match, Fowler said: 'He's won everything, he might want to try something different. I want him to remain a Liverpool player. He is a world class player. Who knows what will happen.'
Alexander-Arnold has spent his entire career at Liverpool to date, making 335 appearances for the club.
He has won a string of trophies: the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
The chance of a new challenge at Real Madrid could make Alexander-Arnold extremely attractive.
Regardless of whether he leaves in the summer, Alexander-Arnold could win even more silverware with Liverpool this season.
Arne Slot's side sit at the top of the Premier League and Champions League table as they progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup. Liverpool is 1-0 behind Tottenham after the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
