Nottingham Forest 2-0 Luton Town: Yates & Sosa score as hosts avoid FA Cup upset

Nottingham Forest made it seven straight wins in all competitions for the first time in 19 years as they beat managerless Luton 2-0 in the FA Cup.

Forest extended their six consecutive Premier League victories with a comfortable success against Sky Bet Championship thanks to goals from Ryan Yates and Ramon Sosa.

It meant they matched Colin Calderwood's run in October and November 2006 as the feel-good factor continued at the City Ground.

They easily put themselves in the hat for Sunday's fourth round draw and can now turn their attention to Tuesday's exciting Premier League match with Liverpool, which could determine whether Forest are truly in the title race.

Luton played their first game since Rob Edwards' departure in midweek and never really threatened victory.

With Tuesday's match in mind, Nuno Espirito Santo made 11 changes but despite the disruption, Forest quickly found their feet and knocked on the door for an early opener.

They should have been ahead in the 17th minute but Taiwo Awoniyi missed a glaring opportunity when a long ball fell kindly to him 12 yards out but his shot dragged wide.

There were moments of danger as Luton, adjusting to life after Edwards, showed threat when Forest goalkeeper Carlos Miguel rubbed Liam Walsh's long-range strike over the crossbar before denying Isaiah Jones a wonder goal after dancing into the area.

But Forest continued to search, with Yates sending a thunderous effort from 25 yards into the crossbar and Jota Silva denied with an impressive block.

The breakthrough finally came in the 40th minute when Yates planted a header into the bottom corner and converted Sosa's excellent cross.

Awoniyi could have doubled the lead early in the second half when another loose ball landed at his feet, but he hit a weak effort past Thomas Kaminski.

The second came in the 67th minute when Jota broke the right side and squared in front of Sosa to sweep home from close range.

That turned out to be enough for Forest as they watched it quietly, while all eyes were now focused on the visit of Arne Slot's men.
