Bompastor: Every game a ‘priority’ as Chelsea fight for trophies

Sonia Bompastor insists Chelsea are treating every match in the second half of the season as a “priority” as they aim to win their first trophy.

Bompastor has enjoyed a seamless transition since taking over from Emma Hayes, with Chelsea sitting top of the Women's Super League, six points ahead of second-placed Manchester City.

The Blues, who have won the WSL title for the past five seasons, are still fighting on four fronts.

They have reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup and Champions League and start their FA Cup campaign in the fourth round against Charlton Athletic on Sunday.

Bompastor is yet to taste defeat as Chelsea boss and has won all but one of her games in charge – a 1-1 draw against Leicester City in their last WSL appearance.

However, Bompastor still expects more from her team as she urges them to keep fighting to win.

“Every match is a priority because every match can bring a trophy for the club,” she said at a news conference.

“I am fortunate that I have a strong squad, which allows me to rotate players across all competitions and we can still be competitive.

“That's the most important thing. As we start the second part of the season we have more competitions with the cup competitions, so we have to be ready for that with the players and the squad we have, while also having some opportunities in the transfer study. window.”

Chelsea had won the FA Cup in three consecutive seasons between 2020/21 and 2022/23, but were knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual winners Manchester United last season.

“[I’m] really excited [for her first FA Cup game]Bompastor added. 'I have heard a lot of good and positive things about the FA Cup in England. As a coach and team, we are all very excited to start this competition.

“The most important thing for us is to stay focused on our strengths and our squad, to make sure we play at the level we want to play. Making sure we execute our game model to the best of our ability.

“It's a trophy to win and that's what this second part of the season is about. We're taking it game by game and we're putting every element into every game to win leagues and titles.”
