Vincent Kompany believes that Bayern Munich should have ended the match against Borussia Mönchengladbach much earlier than they did.
Bayern dominated the entire match at Borussia Park but only came away 1-0 thanks to Harry Kane's penalty in the 68th minute, his 15th goal of the campaign.
Kompany's team had a bag full of chances, including for Thomas Müller and Leon Goretzka in the first half. Alphonso Davies and Serge Gnabry also had late chances to get the points but were denied by Moritz Nicolas.
Bayern have now scored in each of their last 23 Bundesliga games, scoring 64 goals in that run. However, they had 23 shots against Gladbach, good for 3.27 expected goals (xG), with Kompany insisting their margin of victory should have been higher and higher.
“It is a very difficult away match and we have just returned from holiday,” Kompany said at a press conference.
“If you had the chances we had today you would want to score two or three goals to end the game. We never did that.”
Bayern had lost five of their previous nine away games at Gladbach, more than against any other team in the same period, but their hosts were toothless on Saturday, especially in the first half.
In a one-sided opening half, Gladbach did not have a single effort on target and they finished the match without a shot on target, despite five attempts in the second half.
Nicolas was the standout performer as Bayern kept the Gladhbach defense under pressure, with the goalkeeper making nine saves.
“What I liked was the attitude and mentality to keep fighting,” Kompany added. “Things could have happened in the last ten minutes, but we remained calm.
“We could have scored a few more goals, but the team's concentration was really good.”
Kane is back at the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts thanks to his penalty, which saw him leave Omar Marmoush behind, who had scored his 14th goal of the season earlier on Saturday.
It is the fifth time this season that the England captain has opened the scoring in the Bundesliga, having successfully converted his last 11 penalties in the competition.
Bayern regained their four-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the table with this victory, something that would have pleased Kane, who had spoken before the match about his desire to win a first trophy of his career.
“It is true that so far I have achieved individual achievements as top scorer or best player,” Kane told France Football.
“I start every season with the aim of winning a trophy and I am not satisfied with being distinguished only on an individual level.
“I'm only 31. I think the best Harry Kane is yet to come. I have a lot of faith and confidence that the second part of my career, which starts now, will be rich in big trophies.” And when I hang up my boots, it's no longer a topic.”
