Real Madrid were defeated by Barcelona in a shock defeat in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday evening. Los Blancos came into the match as favorites and despite their lead, had no answer to their rivals.
There was no shortage of CCTV footage for Florentino Perez in the Directors' Box, alongside RFEF president Rafael Louzan and Barcelona counterpart Joan Laporta, who managed to keep his composure this time at the King Abdullah Stadium. According to Relevo, barely a word was said in the Real Madrid section of the VIP seating, where Chief Scout Juni Calafat, sporting director Santiago Solari, Ambassador Roberto Carlos and executive committee member Carlos Ocana were all present.
They all avoided each other's eyes and left the stadium with serious faces after the match, quickly entering after the final whistle and staying only as long as Barcelona needed to lift the trophy. Similar scenes played out on the field. Of the coaching staff, only Francesco Mauri spoke to one of the players after the match to try to improve morale. With the exception of Carlo Ancelotti's press conference, only Luka Modric addressed the press, making short statements described by Relevo as 'insufficient'. Of the players, only Jude Bellingham applauded all the Barcelona players who collected medals.
Ancelotti has a tough task to bounce back from the defeat to Barcelona, but returns to action against Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey on Thursday evening, in front of an expectant home crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu. That said, Real Madrid still has a five-point lead over Barcelona in La Liga, and is just one point behind Atletico Madrid in first place.
