Jamie Carragher urges Liverpool to ‘buy a defender’ after Nottingham Forest draw

Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to 'buy a defender' after their 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.

Arne Slot's side extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points, although that could be reduced to four when Arsenal play Tottenham on Wednesday. The Gunners will have played one more game.

They are inching closer to the finish line in their bid to win their second ever Premier League title in Slot's first season in charge, but have now drawn two games in a row.

Liverpool have scored by far the most goals in the league this season – 48, at least six more than any other side – but their defensive record has fallen of late after conceding 12 goals in their last seven Premier League games.

Virgil van Dijk remains the heart of the Reds' defense, with first-choice partner Ibrahima Konate recently returning from injury. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson remain first choice at full-back.

But Chris Wood was the last man to expose the backline when he was played in on the left before scoring on Tuesday, and Carragher took to social media to call for his former side to be strengthened in defence.

“Liverpool should have won tonight but they continue to create big chances even in the games they don't win,” Carragher wrote of X. “But the defensive solidity they had at the start of the season is gone. It always seems likely that you will give in.'

He concluded the post with: “Buy a defender!!!!”

It seems unlikely that Liverpool will enter the transfer market this month – at least not for anything big – as Slot has cover in all three defensive positions.

Conor Bradley excelled at right back, while Jarell Quansah remains in reserve as centre-back.

Joe Gomez, who can play in the back four, is injured, while Kostas Tsimikas, the backup left-back, provided the assist for Diogo Jota's equalizer against Forest.

Slot, meanwhile, was keen to focus on the attacking side of things during his post-match press conference.

“We created a lot of chances in the second half, but we have to give credit to Nottingham,” he said. 'They defend well and throw themselves in front of every cross.

'We wanted three points, but the players gave everything they had. We played excellent football in the second half and created chance after chance.

'I can't remember ever making a substitution that worked as quickly as the one Jota made, but I'm not proud of it. We needed goals. Scoring from a set piece was not something I had in mind when I brought him in.'
