Kompany insists ‘maybe even 99%’ of Bayern success down to players

Vincent Kompany insists “maybe even 99%” of Bayern Munich's success this season is down to the quality of their players as the head coach has shied away from taking credit.

Bayern sit at the top of the Bundesliga at mid-season with 42 points, four points ahead of reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen in second place.

That number after their first seventeen games has only improved in the 2021/22 season (43) since Pep Guardiola's departure from the Allianz Arena in 2016, while their average of 2.5 points per game is joint best in the top flight with Paris five from Europe. Saint Germain.

Although Kompany has achieved good results since replacing Thomas Tuchel last May, he is convinced that the positive start is highly dependent on his team.

“90% of the job is the individual quality of players, maybe even 99%,” he told reporters during his press conference ahead of Saturday's match against Wolfsburg. “I have no arrogance when it comes down to it. I don't feel like making myself important.

“I would always give the credit to the team. Sometimes it is the outside perception to decide everything about the coaches. We make a lot of important decisions, that's true, the energy of the team, the clarity and the plan.”

“But I really think that so many coaches can be successful with so many different styles and ideas because they have good players. That's the most important thing.”

Bayern have also found the net 53 times, but previously did so more often at this stage of a Bundesliga season in 2021/2022 (56).

“Goals is something I would always put forward for all the teams I can coach,” Kompany said.

“I am one [former] defender, but I grew up in Brussels and Anderlecht and street football, and for me it was all about the things you could do when you have the ball.”
