Atletico Madrid are set for an economic boost in the January transfer window with the departure of Arthur Vermeeren confirmed. The Belgian talent failed to convince Diego Simeone in his six months at the club, but RB Leipzig have seen enough to spend on him.
Leipzig borrowed Vermeeren from Atletico this summer for a fee of €3 million, but included a €20 million purchase clause. According to Fabrizio Romano, the German team has decided to activate that clause, which means that it will be a good thing for Los Colchoneros, who will make a nice profit of five million euros in a year for a player that Simeone was not very fond of.
This season, Vermeeren made 22 appearances for Leipzig, providing one assist and earning a starting spot as the season progressed. Last year the 19-year-old played just 160 minutes in five games for Atletico after arriving in January. Vermeeren was reportedly an acquisition mainly made by the now departed sporting director Andrea Berta. They also made the move for Conor Gallagher this summer, but further reports suggest midfield is their priority if they make a move in January.
