Tommy Fury talks about his terrible 2024
Tommy Fury has not boxed since picking up a controversial win over KSI in October 2023.
A hand injury has kept him sidelined ever since and has had a huge negative impact on his personal life.
“I broke all the ligaments in my hand and had to have reconstructive surgery,” Fury told Mens Health.
“I fought effectively for the next three years with a broken knuckle in the middle. I put cortisone in it to numb my hand so I could get through the training, to get through the fights. It was tough, but I just couldn't afford to take a break. I didn't want to sit still for a year.
“I got to a point in the last fight where I couldn't go on anymore and I had to have surgery. They told me it would be off for at least ten months.
The 25-year-old struggled so much with his inactivity that he turned to alcohol, which only made matters worse. Fury has suffered a very public breakup with his fiancée and is now putting the pieces of his life back together.
He added: “2023 was the best year I've ever had. I've won two million pound fights. I got engaged, I had a beautiful daughter, everything. And then suddenly I was lying in a hospital bed and was told that boxing might not be for me anymore.
“Going forward from that [high] to that [low] – lying on the hospital bed, knowing I couldn't fight, couldn't train, couldn't lift weights, couldn't do any of that – [meant] my mental health was in disarray. Really bad.
“I only lived for training and for my family, and all that was taken away from me. So what I did for fun is I started drinking quite a lot. I noticed that it made me feel better. When I wasn't drinking, I would look at my hand and think, I might never be able to box again.
“I just wanted to feel a little bit happy. I went out and drank and drank and drank. It went on like this for a long time. I said no to a lot of work because I wasn't in the right head space and started drinking more heavily, that's what really got to me.”
What's next for Tommy Fury?
Tommy Fury was set to make his long-awaited and long-awaited return to boxing on January 18.
A fight with former UFC star Darren Till was booked to headline Misfits X Series 20 in Manchester, England.
Fury decided to withdraw from the fight after Till threatened to kick him during their pre-fight press conference. One of his former opponents, Anthony Taylor, has since been booked to replace him on KSI's first boxing show of 2025.
This year hasn't started as expected, but Fury is confident it will be much better than the last.
“I have my hand back now, everything is great,” he concluded.
“I'll quickly get back in the ring and pick up where I left off.
“I'm ready now. I've already wasted a year of my life. I am ready to pick up where we left off and have a great 2025 – an even better year than 2023.”
