Erling Haaland contract: Manchester City striker signs new nine-and-a-half-year deal until 2034

Erling Haaland has signed a new nine-and-a-half-year contract that will keep him at Manchester City until the summer of 2034.

The new deal adds to Haaland's previous contract, which Sky Sports News understands was in the region of £400,000-a-week, making him the club's highest earner.

It is also clear that the contract contains no release clauses, meaning that all previous ones have been removed.

Haaland's previous contract was due to expire in the summer of 2027, but he has now put pen to paper on one of the longest deals ever seen in football, meaning he will be 34 years old by the time the contract expires.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Real Madrid after scoring 111 goals in 126 games since joining City from Borussia Dortmund in June 2022.

City, sixth in the Premier League, have been rebuilding this month, with defenders Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis from Lens and Palmeiras respectively close to signing, while a deal has been agreed for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush.

Haaland's new contract comes as City await the outcome of their disciplinary case brought by the Premier League, in which they denied the 115 charges against them.

'I am City, no matter what happens'

Reflecting on his new contract, Haaland said: “I am very happy to have signed my new contract and can look forward to spending even more time at this great club.

“Manchester City is a special club, full of fantastic people with great supporters and it's the kind of environment that helps get the best out of everyone.

“I would also like to thank Pep [Guardiola]his coaching staff, my teammates and everyone at the club, as they have all helped me so much over the years. They made it a special place and now I am City, whatever happens.

“I want to continue to develop, continue to work to get better and do my best to help us achieve more success in the future.”

Haaland also spoke about working with Guardiola, who he described as “the most hardworking person I have ever seen”.

“It's great to talk to him and train and play under him every day; to get his input on me and how I can become a better footballer and develop even further, because he is the best.”

“It's so much fun working with him, not only because he's the best, but he's also the most hardworking person I've ever seen. The number of hours he puts in is motivating and also inspiring.

“It's hard, it's tough, because he demands a lot, but that's what I want. I want people to demand a lot from me and put pressure on me.”

Haaland scored 10 goals in the first five Premier League games of this season, including back-to-back hat-tricks, but has managed just six in 16 league appearances since. He is second behind Mo Salah, who has scored eighteen goals, in the top scorers list.

Haaland has won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, an FA Cup and a Super Cup in his two-and-a-half seasons at Manchester City.

City signed Haaland to a five-year contract for £51 million by paying his release clause in a deal expected to total £85.5 million when agent fees, signing bonus and other costs were taken into account.

He scored 86 goals in 89 games for Dortmund after joining from RB Salzburg in January 2020.

Pep: Erling can improve – he won't take a nap now!

Pep Guardiola admits he could hardly believe the news. Haaland has signed a new nine-and-a-half-year contract with City.

Guardiola said at a press conference: “I said: 'Can you repeat it?' And he said to me (10 years old). I said: 'Sure?' and he said, 'Yes'. So good news.

Haaland, who joined City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, will be 34 when he completes the new contract. His previous contract expired in 2027.

The announcement, which will reportedly see Haaland paid £500,000 per week, is a boost for the club amid a frustrating season that has seen them fall off the pace in the title race.

It also comes at a time of uncertainty, as City await a ruling following an independent commission hearing into more than 100 charges relating to alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules, which the club has vehemently denied.

Guardiola said: “It's a vote of confidence for the club, it's the club's confidence in Erling because you never know what could happen in the coming years.

“But the club knows perfectly well how professional he is and his commitment in every match and every day to demonstrate his talent.

“Of course for him in ten years you never know what's going to happen. It's a long, long time and in short careers you always have to say, 'Okay, we'll see what happens.'

“He proved what he wanted and the club had confidence.”

Deal follows 'months' of negotiations

Sky Sports News reporter Ben Ransom:

“It's absolutely huge. What an asset for Manchester City. What a moment to release this news.

“They call it a ten-year contract because we are in the first year. It is unprecedented when you look at the contract length that Manchester City has given to a player.”

“In terms of a player to give it to, who is better than Erling Haaland? A man who has already achieved so much and scored so many goals in his two and a half years here.”

'You can only dream where his score could end up if he stays until 2034, when he will be 34.

“He is clearly a player who loves Manchester City. He is someone who was born into a family that had a real connection with City through his father, Alfie Haaland.

“From City's perspective it is a great joy that he has secured his future.

“This is a deal that has taken some time to come together. I am told there have been months and months of negotiations between Txiki Begiristain, incoming football director Hugo Viana, Manchester City executives, and Haaland and his team .

“But he was always keen to extend his stay here. He clearly absolutely loves life at Manchester City.”

“There has always been a feeling externally that Haaland was here as a stepping stone to Real Madrid, but he has committed his future here.

“It shows how much he's enjoying it. He's happy to be here, he's here to stay, and he's absolutely thrilled.”

Analysis: Haaland can break scoring records

Sky Sports' Nick Wright:

Erling Haaland's new contract is bad news for Manchester City's rivals in the Premier League. With 79 goals in 87 games since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, plus a further 32 in 39 games in other competitions, his scoring exploits are extraordinary.

His Premier League goal tally is 24 higher than anyone else's in the same period, with Mohamed Salah on 55, the only other player to even reach a half-century. Haaland is in a class of his own when it comes to the art of putting the ball into the net.

After just two and a half seasons, he is close to the top 50 of the Premier League scoring charts. Continue at his current pace and he will be level with Fernando Torres (85) before the end of next month. Ruud van Nistelrooy's total (95) will be equaled in May.

The difference, of course, is that those two players, as well as all the players above him, took much longer to reach those kinds of numbers. Haaland has set new standards in the league, averaging 0.99 goals per 90 minutes since his debut.

With nine and a half years left on his new contract, and him still to reach his peak at 24, he should have time on his hands when it comes to landing the name at the top of the pile. Alan Shearer's total of 260 goals came from 441 games. It's unlikely Haaland will need that many.
