Liverpool transfer news: Van Dijk ‘in talks’ over blockbuster move

Liverpool enjoyed a brilliant day on Saturday as Darwin Nunez's dramatic brace earned them a 2-0 win over Brentford.

The Reds now sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League after Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw by Aston Villa despite leading 2-0. Arne Slot's side had 35 shots without success before Nunez scored with the 36th and 37th in west London, causing jubilant scenes on the bench.

With a game in hand against their rivals, things are looking bright for Liverpool, who sit at the top of the table in pole position. But they could still be tempted to take advantage of the January transfer window, which could strengthen their position even further.

Here are the latest rumors about Liverpool, who are already looking forward to the summer transfer window.

Virgil van Dijk is reportedly in talks with Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal over a transfer this summer. Van Dijk is expected to put pen to paper on a new two-year contract at Anfield, but neither he nor Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah have done so yet.

This means that transfer rumors can still circulate, with a free transfer this summer – in theory – still a possibility. It means Middle Eastern journalists can speculate that Van Dijk is considering a move to Al-Hilal this summer.

The report states that the club's chairman, Fahad bin Nafel, met with the Dutchman's agent in London. Al-Hilal reportedly wants to get him in time for the Club World Cup in America. It seems like wishful thinking for them as Van Dijk is currently captain of a club fighting for the Premier League title.

According to German newspaper TZ, Liverpool have started informal talks with Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich. Kimmich has been with Bayern since 2015, but his current contract expires at the end of the season.

He remains a key player under Vincent Kompany and Bayern are trying to agree a new contract for the versatile midfielder. However, nothing has been agreed yet and Liverpool are apparently considering a move for the Germany international.

Liverpool are certainly in the market for a midfielder, having missed out on the signing of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad last summer. Zubimendi turned down a £51m move to Anfield but looks set to move to Arsenal this summer.

Another midfielder Liverpool are interested in is Wolves star Joao Gomes, according to PL Brasil, but he appears to be out of reach. The report states that he may not leave in the summer for just under €60 million – which would be more than triple the amount Wolves paid to sign him from Flamengo in January 2023.

Unsurprisingly, a January transfer is considered 'impossible' as Wolves face the threat of relegation from the Premier League. Gomes is also under contract until June 2028, meaning they are under no pressure to sell.
