Wanted: reinforcements.
That's the sign that Mikel Arteta will hang up Colney outside London if Arsenal don't bring in some new players soon. The Gunners' squad is getting thinner as their chances of winning the Premier League title diminish, as evidenced by Saturday's frustrating 2-2 home draw against Aston Villa in which they squandered a two-goal lead.
A striker is at the top of Arsenal's wish list, with Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres constantly being linked. Arsenal will have to do well after being six points behind leaders Liverpool, who also have one game in hand.
Here's a round-up of the latest transfer news from the Emirates.
Sesko bid of £70 million prepared
Arsenal are considering making a £70m bid for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. The Sun reports that Sesko, 21, is expected to leave the Bundesliga team this summer, although Arsenal are considering a bid which, if accepted, would take the Slovenian international to the Emirates this month.
Sesko was a target for Arsenal this summer but the Gunners missed out as the striker signed a new long-term contract with Leipzig. His new deal ended the much-discussed £55m release clause, which was rumored to have been triggered by several Premier League clubs.
Real Madrid forms the Saliba plan
Real Madrid are reportedly planning to make a move for William Saliba this summer. The reigning Spanish and European champions have long been linked with a move for Saliba and Foot Mercato claims the wheels are turning at the Bernabeu.
The French centre-back is being eyed for a summer move as Madrid's aging backline is in need of an overhaul. Saliba, 23, could be part of a double Premier League wave, with Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold also a target.
Arteta is sending a clear message
Mikel Arteta has sent his clearest message yet: Arsenal's owners must give him money to spend in the January transfer window. After their disappointing 2-2 draw against Aston Villa, Arteta claimed the Gunners are 'very, very short' when it comes to having strength in depth compared to their title rivals.
Asked if the result will increase the pressure to make new signings, the Arsenal manager said: “When asked if the result will increase the pressure to make new signings, Arteta said: “Not the result. If you look at the performance, I don't think I do that.” I don't know how many teams are playing at this level in the league. If you look at the bench, you probably say: 'Look at the bench, we are very, very small.”
