Barcelona demands halting January exit for defender

Since leaving the club last season on a loan deal, Girona have made it clear publicly and privately that they would love to have Eric Garcia back at the club. He is one of the players for whom Barcelona would consider an exit in the January transfer market.

Although manager Hansi Flick is keen to keep Garcia unless he receives reinforcements, the club will let him go if they get the right offer. MD reports that Girona are willing to pay around €10 million for Garcia, but Barcelona do not believe this is enough. Talks are likely to continue until the final days of the transfer market, with both sides looking to put pressure on the clock. Garcia is happy to return to Girona, but is also happy to stay at the Blaugrana for the rest of the season.

Earlier in January it was reported that Barcelona and Girona had reached an agreement for Garcia, but his departure depended on the future of Ronald Araujo. With the Uruguayan seemingly remaining, that should give Barcelona the space to agree a contract for an out-of-contract player within 18 months. Still, Flick could argue that unless the fee is enough to bring in reinforcements, Barcelona will get a lot more from a sale now than they did in the summer.
