Trent Alexander-Arnold has been told he is 'not a good defender' and will be 'killed' if he eventually joins Real Madrid.
Alexander-Arnold is out of contract at the end of the season and the Liverpool star has been heavily linked with a move to Madrid. Reports from Spain claim that the England international already has a verbal agreement to join the LaLiga giants.
However, former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit, who spent one season in LaLiga with Barcelona, believes Alexander-Arnold will struggle in Spain. “He has been playing at Liverpool for so long,” Petit told Casino Utan Game Break.
“His match against Manchester United was a nightmare. He responded well in the FA Cup but I still wonder what his best position on the pitch is. For me he is not a right back. He is not a real defender. but he is so good with the ball.
“So, are you offering him a huge contract? I know he is linked to Real Madrid. Frankly, if he goes there, they will not forgive anything at Real Madrid. He will go there, and the fans and the club I will say to Trent: forget what you've done with Liverpool so far.
“You won silverware at Liverpool. You were a Champions League winner. You were a Premier League winner. Forget that. That's exactly what happened to me when I went to Barcelona. They said to me: forget what you did until have done so far.”
“You're starting on a new page. So now you have to make history with us. If Trent does what he does defensively at Real Madrid, they will kill him. It doesn't matter if he gives assists or scores goals, they will kill him. ” will kill him.
“Look what happened in the Super Cup final? Oh my God. Defensively it was a nightmare to watch Real Madrid. Can you imagine Trent Alexander-Arnold in this mess? After two, three games they will kill him .” If I were Trent Alexander-Arnold I would think twice about it.”
Petit's comments come after Roy Keane suggested Alexander-Arnold is a League Two defender after competing against Manchester United earlier this month. “Trent Alexander-Arnold was all over the place defensively,” Keane told Sky Sports.
“His defense is schoolboy stuff. He has to do better. They are talking about him going to Real Madrid. The way he defends, he is going to Tranmere Rovers next. He has to do better.”
