Jamie Carragher has questioned Ruben Amorim's “bizarre and ridiculous” comments after Manchester United's Premier League defeat to Brighton.
United were beaten 3-1 by Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday, making it the tenth game they have lost in 22 Premier League games this season – the first they have gone into double figures for defeats in the Premier League since 1989-90 top class.
Amorim didn't hold back when speaking to Sky Sports after the match, describing this current squad as “perhaps the worst team in the history of Manchester United”.
However, Carragher does not believe the United boss should have made these comments publicly as he believes it could further damage his players' confidence.
“I don't know the history of Man Utd as well as Gary Neville does, but I have to say it was one of the most bizarre and ridiculous things I've ever heard a manager say,” Carragher told Sky Sports News.
“Why you would make a comment like that… that's the kind of comment an expert would make, someone in my position, and you should defend it. I don't know what he benefits from that, what the advantage is.
“We all know they're a bad Man Utd team. They'd lost another game at home to Brighton; they'd done that in recent years anyway.”
“We know it's a difficult season, we know it's a bad team. He just loosened it up a little bit. That will be a quote that will haunt him for the rest of the season.
“He said to the journalists there: 'I will give you the head'. Why you would want to do that as a manager, I will never know. It does not help you in terms of self-confidence.”

United suffered their sixth Premier League home defeat of the season, which is the most in their first twelve home league games since 1893–94 (seven).
Amorim has now suffered five defeats in 10 games since succeeding Erik ten Hag at United, who are 13th and on course for their worst ever Premier League finish.
“I don't have much sympathy for the players in the Man Utd dressing room; they have been a joke for a few years,” Carragher added.
“A few weeks ago, after they played Liverpool, where Lisandro Martinez was talking about the mentality being different, I could hardly stop laughing when I saw that.
“The number of times Man Utd have thrown in the towel over the last four or five years with poor performances…
“What I would say is, how can the manager go into the dressing room between now and the end of the season and constantly try to build them up and give them the belief to beat the opposition, whoever they face, when he said they don't.” I'm one of the worst teams in Man Utd history. At no point can I see what he will gain from it.”
United, who have conceded the first goal in each of their last five Premier League games at Old Trafford, are back in action on Thursday with a home Europa League match against Rangers.
