Jamie Carragher concocted a cunning lie about Thomas Tuchel to extract some exclusive details from Chelsea star Noni Madueke on Monday evening.
Madueke scored Chelsea's third goal against Wolves on Monday night to continue his impressive form and make a pitch for more action in England after making his debut in September.
Tuchel attended Premier League matches after starting as England head coach this month, and Carragher used that as inspiration for his ploy.
In an interview with Madueke on Sky Sports after Chelsea's 3-1 win, he said: 'Noni, Thomas Tuchel was watching the game tonight, we spoke to him just after the game and he said you were the standout figure. I'm sure you're very happy about that?'
In his response, Madueke revealed a mysterious detail. “I spoke to him earlier this week and we had a laugh about the game,” he said.
'I told him I had scored a hat-trick in the previous match and he said, 'Well, you better score again.' “I'm glad I was able to do that and I was pleased that he thought I played well today.”
Monday Night Football host David Jones laughed throughout and jumped in: “I feel like I need to clarify Noni, Jamie is having one of his wind-ups.”
Madueke saw the funny side and laughed herself. “No, that's a good one… that's a good play from you,” he said.
The 22-year-old has been very fortunate against Wolves this season, having scored a hat-trick against them at Molineux in August.
He was booed and booed from the first minute that day after accidentally posting an expletive about Wolverhampton on the night of the match.
Madueke uploaded (and then quickly deleted) a post to his Instagram Story. The post was tagged with the city of Wolverhampton and read: 'Everything about this place is s***'. It was quickly deleted, but followers took a screenshot of it and it went viral.
Madueke followed it up with another post that read, “Damn wrong Instagram account.. You guys are way too fast.”
He also apologized: “I would like to apologize to anyone I may have offended. It's just human error, an accident. It wasn't supposed to appear like that on my socials. I'm sure Wolverhampton is a nice city and I'm sorry.'
With seven goals to his name this season, he is just one fewer than last season and he hopes to become one of Tuchel's trusted stars ahead of next year's World Cup.
Chelsea climbed back to fourth place in the Premier League ahead of Manchester City with their victory over Wolves.
