Manchester United ‘make shock enquiry for Premier League defender’

Manchester United have launched an investigation into Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell, a report has revealed.

The Red Devils have been linked with the signing of Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu, but could use the sale of a number of out-of-favour players to free up cash.

Ruben Amorim has been forced to play right back Diogo Dalot in the left wing position this season due to the injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

The latter has been used sparingly by the Manchester United boss, who is fully fit again this season after an absence of more than a year.

According to ESPN, the Red Devils are 'exploring the possibility' of signing a left back if they can afford one this month.

As well as Denmark international Dorgu, the report claims Wolves' Rayan Ait-Nouri and Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell have also been investigated.

United had initially targeted Nuno Mendes at Paris Saint-Germain, but that was always going to be a difficult deal due to the costs. Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez was also considered but again would not be sold cheaply.

Amorim is keen to strengthen his options before taking on players against United versus Rangers in the Europa League and still in the FA Cup on Thursday.

The terms of Antony's departure to Betis have been agreed outright, but details are still to be finalized as Amorim evaluates what he needs to work on in the future.

Dorgu's contract with Serie A club Lecce expires in 2029. The 20-year-old started his youth career at Copenhagen-based Husum Boldklub before moving to Nordsjaelland's youth academy.

In 2022 he signed for Lecce and a year later was promoted to the senior team, where he made his debut in the Coppa Italia in August 2023.

Mitchell, meanwhile, has started every game for Palace in the Premier League this season and has impressed as the Eagles climbed the ranks.

He made a total of 170 appearances for the south London club, scoring three goals and assisting eleven.
