Arsenal goalkeeper Benjamin Sesko will be available for £67 million this summer, leaving Mikel Arteta and Co with a major dilemma.
The Gunners are in desperate need of more firepower with both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus sidelined. And with goals currently hard to come by, the club's apparent reluctance to look for a new striker in the January transfer window has left some fans frustrated.
It's no secret that Sesko is one of Arsenal's top targets: they were even eyeing a move in the summer, before the Slovenian striker decided to sign a new contract with RB Leipzig.
But Arsenal are now making several rounds and are known to be keeping an eye on Matheus Cunha, who could leave Wolves this month. And with them unlikely to sign both players, Arsenal and Arteta have plenty to think about in the coming weeks.
Earlier this month it was reported that Cunha was close to signing a new contract with Wolves. But Mirror Football understands that the player's agent is looking to move the goalposts on the said deal, while keeping an eye on any potential transfer opportunities.
Signing the Brazilian would undoubtedly boost Arsenal's attacking potential in the title race. But with Sky Sports revealing that Sesko could move for €67 million at the end of the season, Arsenal could decide that waiting for the RB Leipzig star is the better option.
Wolves are said to be demanding as much as £80million to let Cunha go this month as they compete on the wrong side of the Premier League.
Alexander Isak, another striker whom Arsenal admire, is another name who is unavailable this month but could be in line in the summer if Newcastle fail to qualify for the Champions League.
Cunha was questioned by Wolves boss Vitor Pereira on Monday evening after the striker appeared to snub fans and head straight into the tunnel following the 3-1 defeat to Chelsea.
“This is something that cannot happen again. The frustration is the frustration. I understand everything, we have to be together,” Pereira said.
“And together we can solve the problems and stay in the Premier League. If we start complaining about this and that, it won't work. [Cunha] committed to Wolves, but when you start listening to the other clubs, I think he's human, the players start a little… It's normal in football.
“He needs to put his mind on the goal to raise his level. He is coming from an injury, it is normal that he is not at the same level to help the team with his quality. He has a lot, the team needs him with good energy, not from frustration he has to slow down and set the mind in the right way.
“He's a captain. He can get frustrated because he wants to win, but everyone in the dressing room wants to win. I don't like his body language. I understand it now, I won't understand it next time.”
