Official | Southampton sign Rennes’ Albert Grønbæk

Southampton FC has loaned Rennes midfielder Albert Grønbæk (23), both clubs have confirmed. Grønbæk only arrived in Brittany last summer after a twelve million euro transfer from Norwegian top team Bødo/Glimt. However, he has struggled to gain a foothold in the French league, with just two goals and an assist in 18 appearances for the club. The Denmark international submitted a transfer request to leave Jorge Sampaoli's Les Rouge et Noir.

The Argentina manager added that Grønbæk “hasn't really found his place here” and that he was “unhappy” in Rennes. Following Rennes' embarrassing exit from the Coupe de France at the hands of Troyes, Grønbæk has been dropped from Sampaoli's training squad, alongside Baptiste Santamaria, Glen Kamara and Gauthier Gallon. “I'm just so excited. It is a big club and I think the playing style suits me very well, so I am very happy to be here,” said Grønbæk. “The facilities are very good and the stadium looks fantastic. It's even bigger and better when you come in person, so I'm so excited to play there. I am proud to be here.”

According to Foot Mercato, Grønbæk's loan includes a €15.5 million option to make his move to Saint-Mary's permanent. Grønbæk could make his Southampton debut on Saturday when Ivan Juric's Saints host Newcastle United FC.
