How Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal will pocket huge windfall

LIVERPOOL, Arsenal and Aston Villa will receive major financial windfalls if they finish in the top eight of the Champions League.

After Tuesday evening's matches, the Premier League trio occupied first, fifth and eighth place respectively in the rankings of 36 teams.

Each of the teams taking part in this season's revamped competition will be guaranteed to take home £15,744,700.

But thanks to the league's new ranking bonus system, and thanks to their final position in the rankings, they are all eligible to receive whopping bonuses.

The total bonus amount for the tournament has been split into 666 equal parts which were initially valued at £232,516 each – the amount the last-placed team in the competition will receive.

The 35th-placed side will take home two shares, which will be allocated until the table topper is awarded 36 shares.

As it stands, current leaders Liverpool will pocket a whopping £8,370,576 for 36 shares.

Arsenal, who are in fifth place, will take home 33 shares, worth £6,742,964.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, are on course to rake in £6,975,480 as a seventh-place finish will earn them 30 shares.

However, the shares will be increased due to the undisputed prize money for draws, increasing the pot by £591,675 each time.

Teams will also receive an additional £1,775,445 for every win they achieve in the group stages.

That means Liverpool's seven wins have earned them a whopping £12,428,115.

Arsenal and Villa's respective four wins have earned them £7,101,780 so far.

Arsenal return to the Champions League on Wednesday evening, welcoming Croatian big boys Dinamo Zagreb to the Emirates.

Villa, meanwhile, will look to bounce back from Monaco's defeat to Scottish champions Celtic next Wednesday.
