Harvey Elliott has insisted he will not leave Liverpool in the January transfer window after scoring the winner as they beat Lille in the Champions League.
The goal was Elliott's second of the season and he celebrated by making a 'shush' gesture, signaling his intention to remain at Anfield despite rumors he could leave this month.
Elliott has yet to make a Premier League or Champions League start since recovering from a broken foot, which kept him out of action for around three months, but the 21-year-old wants to stay at Liverpool.
“I think it's pretty clear to be honest… I'm not leaving,” Elliott told Amazon Prime when asked about his celebration. “I said it in an interview the other day: this is my team, this is my club, I'm a big fan and we're in a great position so far this season.”
Host Gabby Logan interjected: “So you're basically shutting them up?” Elliot then replied: “Yes, without saying anything on social media. To be honest I haven't really seen everything, there's just been a few things, like my friends have said a few things, they've been calling me left, right and center saying 'you're going here, here and here', and it's the first I hear of it.
“It [speculation] That's always going to happen in January, especially after being out for a long time and not really playing as much as I would like, but that's football.
“I've had conversations with the gaffer, but at the same time I have to understand the situation. The team is flying – we are first in the Premier League and Champions League. To go in and say I have to start would actually be stupid of being myself.
“You know what the answer will be. I have to stay patient and when I get opportunities, no matter how long it takes, just enjoy the moment, especially after being injured for three months at the start of the season.
“I just want to enjoy my football and if the opportunity arises, I have to show the coach that if I am needed, I am ready.” Elliott's goal gave Liverpool a 2-1 victory over Lille and ensured Arne Slot's side progressed straight to the round of 16, along with Barcelona.
“We are happy to be in the top eight,” said Slot. “These rankings mean nothing. Maybe the number 24 is better than the number 16, but the 16 had an easier draw. We would like to be at the top, but we have to wait and see whether it is an advantage.”
