It was an eventful evening for Micah Richards as the Champions League returned to action.
The former Manchester City defender saw his own return to CBS on Tuesday evening, alongside a lively team of Kate Scott, Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher, covering Liverpool's win and Aston Villa's defeat. But it was Barcelona that probably left the strongest impression on the team.
During the trip to Benfica, Hansi Flick's team fell behind 3-1 thanks to Vangelis Pavlidis' hat-trick. The Catalan club only trailed 4-2 in the 78th minute before Robert Lewandowski scored a second penalty and Eric Garcia got on the scoresheet.
Raphinha kept the match from ending in a draw and his 96th minute goal gave Barca a 5-4 lead and saw it literally play out in the CBS studio. “Take your time, give it,” came the call from Richards before he and Carragher burst from behind their desks.
Richards climbed to his feet and was left open-mouthed, but not because of what he had just seen. The expert's head whipped around quickly before a faint whisper of 'I've lost a button' escaped his mouth.
The 36-year-old's suit jacket was thrown open as he rose to his feet with the button fastened and flew away, leaving his colleagues in raptures of laughter. Appraising the moment afterward, Richards said, “I had too much to eat, right?”
“A very big problem,” he added, trying to cover himself with the jacket.
It was a tough night on the fashion front for the ex-Aston Villa ace, who was also targeted for his new haircut. Richards was simply destroyed by Carragher.
“New you, who is it?” Scott asked Richards during the show. “I look fantastic, don't I?” Richards replied cheekily. Carragher had a different opinion. “It doesn't suit you. I say that as a friend,” said the ex-Liverpool defender. Richards usually burst out laughing and said, “Can't you just say that out of the blue?”
The expert, who appeared on the scene, said it was a case of 'new year, new me' for his new work. Scott appeared to be a fan of the change and said it was 'nice and crispy'.
The show then pulled up a photo of Richards' former appearance next to his new one. Carragher made his feelings clear: “To be honest, you look awful. You look so cool on the other person. Not cool. Why did you do that?'
