Lille star David makes Liverpool stance clear after free transfer audition

Jonathan David believes Liverpool could be the best team in the world after their Champions League victory over Lille.

The French side's striker scored at Anfield to cancel out Mo Salah's opening goal. But with the Ligue 1 team down to 10 men, Harvey Elliott's goal secured three points and qualification for the last 16 of Europe's premier competition.

David has now scored against Liverpool, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Juventus this season. The Canadian international is in the final six months of his contract and will be available on a free transfer in the summer.

The 25-year-old was previously shortlisted by Liverpool when the club signed Diogo Jota. The Reds have been linked with a move for David, who is not expected to sign a contract extension in France.

David got a positive impression of his opposition on Tuesday evening. “Very good team,” he said after the match. “I think they might be the best team in the world right now.

“There is one more goal tonight [for me]. I'm happy that I was able to score, but we didn't manage to get the three points.”

“We came against the top of the Champions League group so we knew it would be a complicated game, even more so when we went with ten men,” he added. “It's frustrating, we wanted to last as long as possible, but it's very difficult.

“Today was not our day. Being together. Everyone is very solid and compact. We want to play our game and play, that's how we move forward.”

David has already said he is open to a move to the Premier League this summer. But it's not the only destination he's focused on as he considers the next step in his career.

“What am I waiting for? I think it's easier to say now. I'm in the last year of my contract,” David said earlier this season. “Eventually my contract expires. So we'll see. We'll see what happens next year. I'm open to everything.

David's representatives recently reiterated that everything is on the table when it comes to his future.
