Ruben Amorim admitted he said “things I shouldn't have said” after describing his Manchester United side as “perhaps” the worst team in the club's history.
The Red Devils boss made the observation during his press conference following his side's 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
It was Man Utd's sixth defeat in 11 Premier League games since taking charge in November, leaving them 13th in the table.
Amorim admitted that his comments were made in the heat of the moment, but stressed that there are important issues that need to be resolved.
“I had it more for myself than for my players,” he told reporters during his press conference ahead of the Europa League match between Man Utd and Rangers. “But sometimes it's very difficult to hide my frustration at that moment.
“The great thing is that five minutes earlier I said the same things in a different way in the dressing room. The reaction was very normal, because I am very blunt with my players.”
'I don't normally talk [to the players] after a game. After this match I needed to talk. Maybe it was a mistake because then I became more nervous, went to the press conference very nervous and said things I shouldn't have said.
“Right now we are performing very poorly and our results are very poor. I am stating the obvious. If you want, I can be delusional and say different things. But I am saying it as I saw it.”
“I think it's good to be very honest. You saw one thing, I saw one thing. When you are in the stadium you can understand it, so let's be honest and work on it.”

The Red Devils welcome Rangers hoping for a rare success at Old Trafford, where they have lost four of their last five league games. Harry Maguire called for focus as he and his teammates try to restore balance.
“If I could explain it, we would change it immediately,” the defender said. “We have players who have won a lot of trophies in club football, but as a team we are not playing well enough.
“We gave Brighton a goal. We talked about it before the game. The first goal [conceded] against Nottingham Forest was a set play – and against Bournemouth.
“These are not things that are a problem tactically. You have to be mentally ready to win a match. At the moment we are not getting the small margins because we are not mentally focused.”
