Kai Havertz scores landmark Arsenal goal to all but seal top-eight place – 5 talking points

Declan Rice put Arsenal on course for the last 16 by scoring their fastest Champions League goal since 2014.

Mikel Arteta's side sit third in the table with 16 points and face Girona in the final round of matches next Wednesday, with only an unlikely run of results excluding them from the top eight.

Midfielder Rice drove for the first time after 104 seconds after Kai Havertz's clever assist.

And Havertz headed home midway through the second half for the 500th goal of the Arteta era before Martin Odegaard made it 3-0 in extra time.

Rice was also pelted with a number of missiles from Dinamo fans as he lined up to take corner kicks as riot police were called in in the second half.

Not a bad evening as Havertz's centre-forward.

With his first touch he cleverly laid the ball for Rice to slam home the opener and after more good link play the Germany international rose high to head in Gabriel Martinelli's cross and make it a very comfortable, albeit cold night would be in the north. London.

This has been a difficult period for Havertz, but he now has fourteen goals in all competitions.

This was better from Raheem Sterling.

His struggles since joining on loan from Chelsea have been well documented, but when given the chance to start again he embarked on some trademark runs that were not far from a defining moment.

Sterling was booked early in the second half for a late challenge, but could he perhaps flourish if opportunities presented themselves more often in Bukayo Saka's continued absence? Don't rule this out completely based on this evidence

There have been seven rounds and a large number of forgettable matches, but the new format is starting to take shape and even with sixteen points, Arsenal are still not 100 percent certain of a place in the top eight.

They won't drop to ninth until there is a remarkable run of results in next week's final set of games, starting with an away defeat to Girona.

Yet there is real danger lurking elsewhere at the table and it promises to be enough drama for just one night.

Fortunately for Arteta, the Gunners won't be at the center of that.

Ian Wright suggested before this match that Arteta simply doesn't like Jakub Kiwior after the Poland international was left out against Aston Villa on Saturday and Jurrien Timber was deployed at centre-back.

But Kiwior was catapulted back in as a right-sided centre-back against Dinamo.

And while it wasn't the most demanding night for Kiwior, who has been linked with a move despite having little substance, he acquitted himself quite well.

On the two occasions Rice dared to take a corner during the first half, he was pelted with missiles by traveling fans with one of the most fearsome reputations on the entire continent.

Dinamo Ultras were banned from attending European away matches last season after a Greek teenager was stabbed to death before they faced AEK Athens in August 2023.

And in 2022 there was widespread condemnation, plus a fine, when some gave the Nazi salute before facing AC Milan at the San Siro.

But these rebukes clearly did little to calm a rowdy group.

Shortly after Havertz headed in Arsenal's second goal, at least 30 police officers dressed in riot gear rushed to the away corner, creating an additional dividing line between the home fans.

Dinamo fans were also seen throwing missiles over police and in the direction of home fans.
