Arsenal rising star Myles Lewis-Skelly has been added to the club's growing injury list as Mikel Arteta revealed the reason behind the youngsters' Champions League omission.
The versatile 18-year-old has been a rare asset in Arsenal's current injury crisis, which has seen a host of key defenders injured during a hectic run of games.
Lewis-Skelly was given the starting minutes by Arteta after Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu were out injured and has started the club's last two previous Premier League games.
However, Arteta revealed that Lewis-Skelly could not complete training on Tuesday after breaking his knee in the thrilling 2-2 draw against Aston Villa last weekend.
Oleksandr Zinchenko was recalled to the Arsenal starting line-up in Lewis-Skelly's absence for the visit of Dinamo Zagreb, as Arteta confirmed another destabilizing injury complaint.
Explaining Lewis-Skelly's absence, the Gunners boss told TNT Sports: 'He couldn't finish training yesterday [Tuesday] Unfortunately.
“He had an incident during the match against Aston Villa and he wasn't feeling well yesterday so he couldn't finish the session,” the Spaniard added.
Lewis-Skelly was initially pictured smiling during the problematic training session before stopping and going back in for further assessment.
However, the England Under-19 international did make the trip to the Emirates for the Champions League despite being unavailable for selection and watching from the stands.
Further scans and assessments will take place on Thursday to discover the severity of Lewis-Skelly's complaint, with supporters hoping it will not be a long-term problem.
The attacking full-back has made 16 appearances in all competitions for the first team this season as Arsenal attempted to challenge Liverpool for the Premier League lead.
Meanwhile, it was similar circumstances for Calafiori, who missed the last three games with a muscle problem and was hoping to be included against Zagreb.
Arteta explained that the Italian was alone on the bench and continued: 'The same goes for Ricci, he only trained for 20 minutes.
'Adapt again as we have done all season and bring some freshness to the team, which I also think is important.'
