Martino resigns as Inter Miami coach after early playoff exit

Gerardo Martino has resigned as head coach of Inter Miami due to personal reasons, the MLS team has confirmed.

The Argentine ends his 17-month spell in charge of the Herons following their exit from the MLS Cup just under a fortnight ago.

Martino, who oversaw last season's Miami Leagues Cup win shortly after his arrival, led the franchise to the Supporters' Shield this year with a record 74 points in the regular season.

However, they were eliminated by his former team Atlanta United in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs.

Miami opened their best-of-three series against Atlanta with a 2-1 win, but lost by the same score in Game 2 before falling to a dramatic 3-2 loss in the decider.

“It was an honor to work at such a special club and to lead such a special team,” said Martino.

“I enjoyed my time at Inter Miami and will cherish the memories and relationships built here for the rest of my life.

“I leave with nothing but gratitude for my time here and would like to sincerely thank everyone who made this possible.”
