Villarreal complete permanent signing of Paris Saint-Germain star

Villarreal are currently waiting to complete a deal for the signing of Rafa Marin, but in the meantime they have completed their first deal of the winter transfer window, albeit for a player who was already at the club.

In the final days of last summer's transfer window, Villarreal signed Juan Bernat on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. The former Valencia and Bayern Munich left-back was brought in to provide competition for Sergi Cardona, although he has made just three starts so far this season (one in La Liga).

Nevertheless, Villarreal are happy with Bernat and have now signed him permanently. According to MD, PSG have terminated the 31-year-old's contract, signing him on a contract until the end of the season, meaning the circumstances of the deal have not changed much.

PSG made the decision to terminate Bernat's contract as they had already reached the maximum number of first-team players on loan. They wanted to send Randal Kolo Muani to Juventus for the rest of the season, so to do that they had to terminate the contract of the 11-time capped Spanish defender.

The situation was very messy for PSG, but Villarreal will not mind signing Bernat permanently. He is only signed until the end of the season, although there are chances his contract could be extended, although that decision is unlikely to be made until the summer.

Bernat has struggled to make an impact at La Ceramica, but he does have time to force himself for Sergio Cardona – although that won't be easy as the former Las Palmas defender has been a standout for Villarreal. Yet head coach Marcelino Garcia Toral knows that he has two good options at left back.
