Bizarre moment Butland punches the ball into his own net to give Man United lead

Manchester United took a bizarre lead against Rangers in the Europa League after goalkeeper Jack Butland comically punched the ball into his own goal.

Christian Eriksen's corner early in the second half looked like an easy choice for the stopper, but the ball skimmed the back of his glove before falling behind him.

A slick move from United deflected Bruno Fernandes' strike from inside the penalty area and from the resulting corner Eriksen fired harmlessly into the penalty area.

Butland, who had a short spell on loan at Old Trafford in 2023, ran off his line to play with his fist but misjudged his attempted clearance under pressure.

Instead, the ball slid off his knuckles and into the net.

The 31-year-old was visibly dejected after his mistake and took a few seconds on the ground to collect himself before slowly getting to his feet.

United had seen a goal controversially disallowed from another set piece earlier in the day, but Matthijs de Ligt's header was disallowed after a foul by Leny Yoro.

Yoro is said to have pushed Davy Propper over after the ball had been knocked in.

Rangers legend Ally McCoist was left stunned by the blunder. “Where do I start with that?” he said during TNT Sports' live report. “It's just a roar.

'There's no excuse for that. That's a really bad mistake. Jack Butland must do better.'
