Manchester United once left ex-boss Ralf Rangnick “surprised” after finding out they were not exploring Christopher NKunku – with the Red Devils now reportedly interested in the Chelsea Forward.
Current United boss Ruben Amorim is said to be pursuing a new striker amid doubts over the futures of both Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford. According to ESPN, the club has asked to be “kept informed” of developments regarding the Frenchman, who is reportedly “open” to leaving Stamford Bridge before the end of the January transfer window.
There has even been speculation that a sensational swap between NKUNKU and Garnacho could happen as both clubs look to navigate PSR issues this month.
The same outlet reported in 2022 that Rangnick wanted to bring NKUNKU to Old Trafford when the forward was at Red Bull Leipzig and was shocked when he was told no scouting reports had been made on him, having previously worked with him at the German club.
At the time, NKUNKU was one of the most highly rated strikers in the world after firing 35 goals in 52 games for Leipzig in the 2021-22 season and then added another 23 the following campaign.
He eventually joined Chelsea for £52m in 2023 but his spell in west London has been blighted by injuries, making 42 appearances and scoring 16 goals in the past two seasons.
The 27-year-old has only started three games in the Premier League this season but has still managed to score 13 goals in all competitions.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca refused to close the door on NKunku leaving this month, saying: “With Joao [Felix] and Christo [Nkunku]most managers play only one attacking midfielder.
“They are top players, I like both, they struggle because we usually only play with one attacking midfielder. I'm not saying they will leave.”
Meanwhile, when asked about Garnacho, Amorim said: “I don't know what will happen. Let's focus on the team and the players we have here. We don't know what can happen until the window closes. Anything can happen .”
