Deyna Castellanos: from the Birthplace of California to the City of Roses

De Venezolaan was a free agent after her season 2024 at Breakout team Bay FC and will now try to give her career a kickstart at Portland.

Deyna Castellanos was a pioneer in the field of women's football in Venezuela. Her breakthrough inspired a younger generation in a country that was traditionally overshadowed by the men's game.

Without debuting in a professional competition, and still a teenager, she was on the shortlist of the nominations for the balloon d'Or in 2017 and this later led to a controversial move to Atletico Madrid in Spain.

Over the years, however, the striker born in Maracay has not succeeded in reaching the heights that her talent initially promised. After one season at NWSL newcomer Bay FC, her contract was terminated and she will try to breathe new life into her career at Portland Thorns.

“With the Thorns I want to reach the level that everyone knows I can reach. Bay FC was never against it that I would leave and they helped me enormously. It was all very easy and I would say they did great. The fact that several clubs were interested and had the opportunity to come to Portland was incredible, “she said after she had signed a new NWSL contract.

Her new contract runs until December 2026, with the option to extend another year. After disappointing periods at Atlético Madrid and Manchester City in England, Portland Castellanos again offers an opportunity to realize the promise she has threatened with so often and will try to improve her two hits in twenty games with Bay FC.

Her list of honor takes place in the early stages of her career: two South American championships (2013 and 2016), a NCAA National Championship in the United States (2018), the Golden Shoe on FIFA U-17 World Cup (2014) and the FIFA prize for best U-15 player (2015).
