Jeremie Frimpong admitted that he wanted to sign for Liverpool, who is now reportedly focusing on him, like a young person before he came to Manchester City.
The Reds of Arne Slot can be looking for a new right back if Trent Alexander-Arnold decides to separate at the end of his contract. The vice captain of the club has not yet put a pen on paper about a new deal and is reportedly over the Real Madrid radar for a Bosman transfer.
The Spanish giants had previously made a failed offer for the defender just before the January transfer window. Although they are not expected to make another offer, he is still eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs, because he enters the last six months of his current deal.
When Alexander-Arnold leaves, Conor Bradley is in a good position to fill his boots. However, Liverpool is linked to other right backs, including Frimpong. Interestingly, Frimpong has revealed the past that he was once close to the signing for the Reds, but eventually came to Man City because of logistics issues.
The Bayer Leverkusen player joined the Stadsacademie at nine years old, despite the fact that he initially chose Liverpool above a move to the Etihad after he was exploring both clubs, reports the Liverpool Echo.
“I played striker and scored a hat trick in a final, I won the player of the tournament,” Frimpong said, speaking with Rising Ballers. “There were scouts there such as Liverpool, Bolton, Man City and much more.
“But I chose Liverpool first. I started signing for them, but then driving wasn't something; My family did not drive that way, and it was far. And of course Man City was local, so I tried Man City then, and it was more logical.
The defender left Manchester in 2019 after nine years in Cityzens Blue, on his way to Scotland with Celtic. Frimpong made waves with his debut for Celtic in September 2019 at the age of only 18 and would win the fourth Treble of the club in a row under Neil Lennon.
In 2021 he would continue with the Scottish Premiership – with Celtic's Young Player of the Year Award in his back pocket – and sign for Leverkusen for an unknown fee.
Only two years later his contract was extended until 2028 and he became a regular player of the first team under Xabi Alonso. Frimpong's looting along the right flank was crucial when Leverkusen sealed an unbeaten 2023/24 Bundesliga season, won the competition and a DFB Pokal to start up.
