The former youth team coach of Cody Gakpo has given an emotional tribute to the Liverpool Forward because he was a tower in force, while his wife lost her fight against cancer.
Twan Scheepers, who had an enchantment in Derby County during Phillip Cocu's time as a manager, has revealed how Gakpo helped him and son Tuen when Carola bravely fought against the disease before he dies at the age of 53.
Scheepers played a key role in the development of the Dutchman at PSV Eindhoven – and the couple has stayed close since then.
Speaking for Gakpo's return to his old club to play for Liverpool in the Champions League, Scheepers said: “Cody went through the entire period with us. He always kept sending messages and paid a number of times. Together with my wife and my wife and Son we could go to Anfield to see Cody in action.
“The way he supported us shows what an incredible and loving person he is, alongside all his qualities as a football player.” Cody is going to get such a huge welcome at the Philips Stadium. He is a boy from our city, from our club and from our academy.
“He has been extremely important for PSV Eindhoven and he has taken big steps in his career. If someone already deserves success, it is him.”
Gakpo was praised as the new Arjen Robben when he came through the ranks in Eindhoven. He closed Manchester United for a £ 40 million switch to Anfield in January 2023 after the leading role for Holland at the Qatar World Cup.
And the 25-year-old is in sensational form after being released by the new boss Arne Slot this season.
Scheepers added: “In the beginning it was difficult for Cody in Liverpool. He was looking for the best position that was suitable for him.
“He played for a short time in the role of the striker, he also played behind the rush. But I know he is the most dangerous when he comes out of the left wing. Then he can use his large weapon, cut in and shoot with those large powerful bent shots.
“It is so impressive how he has risen to this level in Liverpool, in the Premier League and in Europe. He is really a top player, an important player now for Liverpool. Every time he gets the ball, something happens on the field . “
