Patrick Dorgu, who is said to be about to get to Manchester United, was encouraged to reject a move to Old Trafford by his former coach.
The 20-year-old is expected to be the first signing of Ruben Amorim as United Boss, with a transfer of £ 33 million from Lecce after completion. Dorgu has fewer than 70 senior games under his belt, but seems to be thrown into the deep as the solution for the wing-back problems of the Red Devils.
A blockbuster move to United may sound like a dream, but the Denmark International may want to think about it twice if the comments of FC Nordsjælland manager Jens Olsen are something to start. The 49-year-old, who coached Dorgu as he manages the U19S team of Denmark, has encouraged the left-sided defender to say no to the 13-way Premier League champions, with reference to the continuous struggles of the club, both on and and on Outside the field.
“If I have to be a little brutal. I hope he now chooses something different than Manchester United,” Olsen told tipsbladet.
“I don't know if it fits badly, but they are just in a period in which … I don't know if you can afford to say no to United, but maybe somewhere where there is a little more structure and where things fit At his pace, “Olsen added. “Sometimes things have to go in the right order, if you can say it that way.”
United has passed one of their worst starts of a domestic season in their history, with 11 defeats in all competitions so far. They also fight and struggle to get in the upper half of the Premier League table, which both spent two weeks of the campaign in 10th place or lower.
The situation is equally worrying outside the field. The club is confronted with increasing fears to violate the financial fair play regulations of the Premier League, while instability at the top only contributes to the unrest. Former sports director Dan Ashworth recently resigned after just five months in the role, and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has introduced a series of drastic cost-saving measures, which further feeds the uncertainty about the future of the club.
Dorgu, who can play on both the left and the right flanks, is mainly used on the left of a rear four at Lecce, but is expected to be used a little further on the left wing-back role in the Amorim team. The position, together with the right wing, is crucial for the 3-4-3 system of the Portuguese coach and reinforcements are high on the list of United's transfer priorities.
Right-wing legs such as Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have come to the left wing-back in recent months, forced with Amorim's hand due to the constant injury problems of Luke Shaw and doubts about the quality of Tyrell Malacia. Similar personnel problems exist on the right, where attacker Amad is sometimes used in the role.
Dorgu spent two years in the Nordsjælland academy before sealing a move from 2022 to Lecce. He made his first team debut in 2023 and has since completed 57 performances for the Serie A club and scored five goals.
He also scored last year on his debut in Denmark against Switzerland, making him the winning goal with his first touch after just 42 seconds. The star born in Copenhagen, who was also eligible to play for Nigeria, has earned four caps and counts for his country.
