Newcastle will allow Lloyd Kelly to become a member of Juventus in a £ 20 million deal – but it is very unlikely that they make new signing sessions for Monday's deadline.
The 27-year-old only came to the club with a free transfer from Bournemouth in June, but the Hierarchy of United sees the offer of the Italian giants as good to reject.
He will go on loan until the end of the season with an obligation to make the deal permanently in the summer.
Sports director Paul Mitchell and others in Newcastle believe that the removal of Kelly's wages, plus the received reimbursements, will improve the PSR situation of the club, strong for what is expected to be a busy season. If the defender was part of the first team of Eddie Howe, their reason would have been different.
However, this season he only made four Premier League-Start and is currently behind Lewis Hall on the left and like Sven Botman and then burn in left-sided center-back. The player's salary would be generous, since he arrived for free, and that is also incorporated into Newcastle's thinking.
But a replacement for Kelly – or Miguel Almiron, who came to Atlanta United for £ 10 million last week – is not expected to arrive this month, and that can still frustrate how and supporters.
Instead, the club wants to maintain what they believe will be a strong position on the way to the next PSR cycle. They also believe that the sale of Almiron and Kelly give them a greater chance of keeping stars such as Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon after this season.
The downside of that argument is that Howe and his team, by reinforcing now, would be better placed to qualify for the Champions League. That hope was taken a hit during the 2-1 home loss on Saturday by Fulham, a competition in which the options of Howe from the bank were limited and the depth of the team was exposed.
Kieran Trippier came up in the second half and he is the subject of Galatasaray. However, a significant offer for Newcastle would be needed to even consider having the defender leave during this window.
Howe made a point after the match of Trippier's contribution, and it is likely that he would object strongly to any idea of the 34-year-old who was sold, even if the offer was attractive for the club.
