Paul Merson has criticized a Premier League club for completing a 'Panic Buy' on the deadline of the winter transfer window.
The former Arsenal star has held doubts about the newest transfer from the team and emphasizes a signature that, in his opinion, will not have much time on the field.
Merson spoke on Sky Sports on Sky Sports, referred Merson to Manchester City, who had a restless winter, who closed the deals with Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vior Reis and Nico Gonzalez, who spent about £ 180 million through the window.
He specifically asked whether the transfer of Gonzalez was needed, given the £ 50.2 million spent on the former porto player.
Merson said: 'I didn't see this boy playing, so don't know too much about him. But they need players in midfield. Many people say it's not alone. It's just Rodri.
'Rodri sees danger, Rodri is disciplined, Rodri stays in the middle, he comes ahead and sits back and also protects the back line, and he passes the ball through the line very quickly.
'The problem is that Gonzalez arrives for £ 50 million, as soon as Rodri's fit is. I don't think he is playing. Unless you play them together and I don't think you should.
“This is the problem with wages and buying players, you forget that this guy is sitting on the couch with big money by the start of the following season.”
Despite an unusual for the 5th place in the Premier League table and a surprise 5-1 loss for Arsenal on Sunday, Merson's band needs no reinforcements in midfield.
He praised the levels of Bernando Silva and Mateo Kovacic, despite the fact that they allow their remarkable underperformance in the last 30 minutes of the game at the Emirates Stadium.
The Arsenal icon added: 'You then look at Mcatee with a brilliant young future and they will have to sell it for the Fair Play rules. It is a domino effect. If they buy Gonzalez, they have to panic poorly to get into the top four. '
Gonzalez became a significant importance of the big club during this campaign at Porto, scored seven goals and delivered five assists in 29 games.
The La Masia Academy product started his career at FC Barcelona in 2021-22 and played in 37 games during his first season.
He later entered Valencia for a loan agreement for a season before he eventually moved permanently to Portugal.
The Spaniard signed a contract of four and a half years and it is clear that Barcelona received a considerable amount as part of the deal.
Gonzalez said to the club's website: 'This is the perfect opportunity for me in this phase of my career.
'There is no football player in the world who does not want to be part of this setup.
'I know the reputation that Pep has and I can't wait to work with him. I am actually honored that he wants me to play in his team. '
